In Australia we are only now starting to fully understand the extent to which individual acts of alcohol misuse can ripple through families and communities. Until recently, conversations about alcohol misuse were typically dismissive and the impacts were seen as being the problem of just one person, the drinker.
The Foundation’s study, The Range and Magnitude of Alcohol’s Harm to Others found that a person dies each day because of someone else’s drinking; there are 70,000 victims of alcohol-related assaults each year – of which 30,000 are domestic violence victims; and there are 20,000 alcohol-related cases of child abuse. That is a staggering impact. These statistics represent reported incidents. The reality is that many cases go unreported.
The World Health Organization, which has identified alcohol-related harms as a priority health issue, has endorsed the report: “The findings in this report gives further evidence of this need [to reducing the harm to people other than the drinker] and it is an important contribution to fulfilling the aims and objectives of the global strategy” (Dag Rekve, Department of Mental Health and Substance abuse, WHO, Geneva).
The overall economic burden of alcohol misuse in Australia is $36 billion each year, including costs to the health system, social welfare, law enforcement and the justice system.
The Foundation commissions research to build the Australian and international evidence-base about alcohol problems and potential solutions. We also fund community projects to prevent alcohol misuse.
